The only thing that worries me is that I will have more money in the car than I could probably sell it for?.... What do you all think?

Don’t forget safety. It’s an older car and is only as cheap as they are due to the cost of parts to keep them in good order. A properly sorted car will give you a much better driving and ownership experience.

it aquaplanes sooner than most vehicles with its wide rear tyres and light body

Blackpools finest are a lot livelier in the wet. Typically wider tyres and 25-30% less weight demand caution in any wet conditions!

I’m just having mine taken off my 2.7. It seems to be good quality and above 3k rpm it sounds awesome but 2.2-2.7k rpm it does drones a bit. Being valved when you shut the valves the drone is much reduced but still there a little. Didn’t want to play around with drone killers so going back to stock and will resell exhaust to raise funds for a second air con condenser :( and also thinking about a hardtop. Exhaust will be up for sale from Thursday if you’re interested in?

Is that a valve and a system or just a valve? Speaking with Carnwell, it appears that there are lots of options and they want to work on what I have rather than exchange?

Well the search is over for 3 weeks at least, off to work tomorrow night until Sunday morning then off to South of France Sunday night for 3 weeks.

Up to you but those you are interested in any private sales, I would phone up and get their email address and/or mobile numbers. Adverts expire if the car has sold or not and some people might not bother renewing all of them.

How long has it been up. For sale do you think?

Losing track of time this summer. I got mine in Mid-June so a week or two after that. I doesn't show number plates from memory but if its in Sittingbourne, it was up for £10k initially.

It’s been for sale for a while that one. Nice looking car. I can remember it as it’s the spec I wanted before I was seduced by the blue with gray interior I now have. The law of sod dictating that if you change your search, the exact car comes at the wrong time!

two important questions, how long have you had it and why are selling?

If I remember correctly you aren’t that far away so you could probably go down there and have a look and a chat to them.

Well remembered that man! I called in this week and discussed this (£250+ vat fitting plus and and brackets and bolts required) and a couple of things.

  8. There is a lot of good stuff there. With the coil overs, within reason you can adjust how you want and if it’s out of the realms of adjustment you are looking for, they can be revalved and/or springs changed. I do like the centre console on that. Looks like a custom one with a small cubby hole.

I'm no mechanic, however I am not scared to get stuck in, I do have a mechanic who used to look after my Z4 3 litre. So am pretty confident.

That’s good - get him to look at the car you want?

Looks as though it's lacked a bit TLC

Love your enthusiasm. I do hope you are going in eyes open and have a few quid in the bank should things not go to plan? Hopefully, you won’t need it but these cars can bite with bills, particularly if you and spanner’s are not good friends.

Given the range of cars you have called up, if I were in your position, I would be sending a deposit to the owner of the well maintaied black 987 in Scotland and planning the twistiest possible route home whilst away on holiday.

  11. Make sure you remember to buy the seals between the pipes and the condenser. Not every new condenser comes with the seals and they are £5 or £6 each from memory and you need to 2 per side. When you clean up the rad behind, you will probably see a sorry looking radiator as well due to the oil and associated crud blocking the fins to a lesser extent. For peace of mind, I cleaned mine up and then ran the engine up to temperature, fans on etc just to make sure that there were no little leaks..

Up to you but I found the kwikfit service very good and they give you a 12 month guarantee.  Any leaks are topped up at no extra charge if I understand it correctly. When I did my 911, I used a local place and they charge by the amount of gas put in (its a bit more than normal on the rear/mid engine cars) and then charged me again when I found a leak and it needed topping up.

didn’t realise Pistonheads charge for ads now, didn’t have to pay before but it’s been a few years ago I guess…

Not so. I put my 996 on there today and any member with 10 years or more history gets free ads. When PetrolTed sold it to Haymarket I was the wrong side of the cut for free ads but not now!

  13. Are you on Facebook? There were several good looking cars up north (that means above Milton Keynes for me) for sale when I was looking. I ruled them out as they had not gone through the ULEZ manual process and there is a lot of traffic in between but worth a look as second cars are hanging around a while!

This one is very similar to what I bought and I paid £8.5k privately with the top for that one but there is some damage to the rear bumper on mine.

When you swap the battery on a 981/718 the official process is that you need to code the make, serial number and the battery's capacity to the car using PIWIS.

This optimises the charging circuit characteristics for the battery, as the car is "told" it has a new battery.

Another reason I am glad to have gone with the earlier generation of Boxster rather than the later one!
At the Festival of Speed yesterday I saw this very traditional looking alternator on a very high tech and un traditional super car.

  15. I have done this twice and it’s not difficult if you are patient and don’t break any clips! remember to change the drier as that helps stop the pipes getting moisture in them apparently.

If you are looking for a simple fix Torque Boxster is not far from you and saw a price from him (might not apply 981) of £550 all in. Pattern parts have gone up (£95 in 2020 to £150 in 2023) and £70 for kwikfit regas plus refill if you have any leaks. Seems a reasonable deal to me if you don’t fancy taking it all apart. You will need a couple of jacks/ramps and some torque and standard spanner’s and screw drivers.

  16. Someone on 911uk, user name Maldren (real name Mike), worked with Centre of Gravity to get a group of COG customers together who have different suspension set-ups from a variety of manufacturers and test them all on road and on track at the same time with the owners driving each others cars (996 to be fair, not 986) to determine what they thought of the various set-ups. There is an article on it out there somewhere if you wanted a thorough comparison?
