fizz
So today started lovely and took it on track at Donny... then I heard a noise and pulled to check it. At idle it was fine but as you raised the revs it started knocking soon bad! Long story short I tried to limp to the closest services before ringing thr recovery company and whilst limping the car started to jolt and loose power and then I stopped it ASAP and got recovered to the service. I'm currently sat here waiting to be picked up and will be taking the car straight to the Porsche Indy I used last week for the service. Sounds terminal... so could be on the look out for a new engine.
DavidC
Today I got started on the double din head unit install. The old unit is out, heater panel all relocated to the lower console and a new storage cubby fitted. The wiring is confirmed working so that's a huge relief. Now I need to work out how to mount the headunit to the Incartec 50-858 fascia and cage. Has anyone used this kit before on a car with cupholders? The tabs on the cage all look too small and far away from the edge of the dash trim, not really sure how to fix this cage in place. Any tips appreciated. Also, while I have the cup holder unit out does anyone know how best to sort the sticking front piece of trim? I think it's supposed to slide to the side when the cup holder tray is opened and then slide back when closed. On mine it's sticking and a spray of WD40 didn't help at all. Patt
Ive installed DDin units before in 986. On EDC's car he had bought an aftermarket kit that was a pig to make work. IIRC I drilled holes where I needed support and then bent as many tabs as possible to make it fit flush. When it came to fitting my own, I used the OEM cage required for the PCM. Bonus was I could wire up the sensor for the alarm and keep that feature too. The OEM cage looked perfect and fitted perfectly - no idea what Porsche will charge for one, but I've always been surprise how cheep their interior plastics are. DavidC
Thanks @Patt It looks like I may need to dremel or file a couple of indents in the plastic for some side tabs to grip.
Patt
I think I used the threaded holes in the headunit and made holes in the cage to suit.
½cwt
Did a 250 mile excursion today to visit @TROOPER88 to pick up US sourced back box. Not in need of it currently but a the price it can sit as stock in my shed and if never used be sold, most likely for more than I paid today. Paul also put my car up o the ramp and we went over it for about an hour. I've come away with a job list, primarily steering rack hard lines, near side top mount bearing and replace corroded rear ARB. Followed on by meeting @RedBarediver for lunch near Horsham where I collected some of the grey interior bits has has recently swap for black in his nice 2.5 (far tidier than mine!) and enjoyed an hour or so talking Boxsters. I want this. You haven’t said if you used regular wd40 or one of their more specialist sprays. Over the years I’ve discovered regular wd40 is a mediocre release fluid and nothing else. I wouldn’t use it as a lubricant, especially not near plastic.
Menoporsche
"WD-40" is abbreviated from the term "Water Displacement, 40th formula",[10] suggesting it was the result of the 40th attempt to create the product. The spray, composed of various hydrocarbons, was originally designed to be used by Convair to protect the outer skin of the Atlas missile from rust and corrosion...[wiki]
DavidC
It was WD40 Specialist Penetrant. I'll probably try some sort of grease, but it's a low priority issue right now. Today I've had the A pillar trim and glove box out to fit a DAB antenna. All went well until I realised the glovebox light no longer turns off. Looks like the metal spring part of the microswitch for the glovebox door snapped off. It doesn't seem fixable so I think I need to get a new glovebox harness. It can wait, for now I'm just leaving it disconnected so it doesn't play games with the alarm. I tested the DAB in the head unit and got patchy results. It seems to be picking up local DAB stations but nothing National. Next is to get the cage mounted into the dash panel, trim behind the cig lighter so that I can fit a USB socket in its place. After that, I think it can all go in.

½cwt
After visiting @TROOPER88 yesterday and going through the fault list on the car, I've ordered new hydraulic hard lines for my steering rack from Porsche 911 Power Steering Rack Pipes (1998-2005) (powersteeringstore.co.uk) (Yes I know it says 911, but it's the same rack in the 986...). Found out Steve Strange doesn't have a standard suspension 986S rear anti roll bar in stock and I'm now investigating front top mount bearings (these are still original having cleaned an regreased them back in 2020 when I did my suspension refresh...). ½cwt
Also whilst visiting Paul he gave me two rubber bushes for one of the pivots on the hood mechanism which will hopefully stop an annoying squeak/rattle when the roof is up. Fitted them this afternoon with a dab of rubber grease as insurance. Weather is just too good to do a roof up test drive today though! pacificjuha
Finally found some time to install the rear toelinks. This was also first time for me to do the rear alignment with properly adjustable toelinks... took a fair amount of time to adjust. Adjusting toe and the camber changes, adjusting camber the toe changes...😅 Anyhow, now the ride was very nice on the sunny test drive. Can't wait for the next track day on 8.6.2024 at KymiRing to test these settings out on higher cornering speeds.

Used the car roof up for a short journey this morning, all squeaking gone!. Good diagnosis @TROOPER88. Only problem, like after doing the suspension it is quieter so I need to recalibrate my noise vs speed feedback loop.
