Paul.
Tried driving the car tonight and it struggled to go above 3k revs. Eventually engine light came on. The car was really struggling revs. Exhaust sounded rough. Any ideas?
Gutley
Sounds like it's in 'Limp mode' suggest you plug a code reader in and see what errors have triggered. Dont recommend starting it up again before diagnosis
Paul.
What are the possibilities that can cause this? Thanks for the feedback.
jhemus
Possibly needs a new coil pack. I had a fairly similar experience - engine light came on and sounded really lumpy. If so, it's a common fault and relatively inexpensive to fix. Fingers crossed for you.
Paul.
Thanks. What are we talking in terms of costs? I have done some research and the possibilities seem pretty endless.
edc
Coil packs are cheap. You ca price checking eBay or eurocarparts. Hard for anybody to give a definitive diagnosis without the car in front of them though as so many things run and affect the engine.
That986
Without you plugging in a scanner and getting the codes you're stabbing away in the dark.
lordlee
Agreed, there are so many things that could cause that. Coils or MAF must be high on the list.
Paul.
Bizarrely, the day after, the car seems to have repaired itself... No engine light and runs as normal. Strange!
Jason986S
I would stil run a diagnostics to see if there are any saved codes. Wouldn't want it happening again when you're in a rush or on a nice drive out.
edc
Was it particularly wet or cold that night? Cars don't fix themselves so I would investigate and fix while you can as it's highly likely to reoccur another time.

Wot e said, sounds like it could be an issue with failing coil packs which will show up first when it is damp. Mine were first changed at 70k/10 years when they developed faults. As it's now done 140k I'll be fitting a new set fairly soon as preventative maintenance. How long have your's been on the car?
Paul.
I usually keep the car in the garage with cover over it. I had left it outside in the cold and rain for a few nights which i rarely do. The car is 9 years old and covered 40k miles.
edc
Then get under it and check the coilpacks. Check your service paperwork to see when it last had a plug and coilpack change.
