phey708
Hi, I have an annoying rattling coming from the rear of the car but it only happens when going slowly over an uneven surface; It doesn't appear when going over speed bumps or on the motorway. Ive had rear drop links changed and I tried to wiggle the rear sway bar to see if it was knocking but it feels solid. What else could be causing it? edc
Your description is a very typical symptom of the rear tuning forks. The rattle often sounds like snooker balls.
phey708
It does sound like a lot of balls rattling around in a plastic case. I think it is the rear left hand side but hard to pinpoint.
Eddy555
The ball joints in the tuning fork wear and then they're loose to rattle about under load. Sound like a screwdriver rattling about in the back.
phey708
Is this the right part: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/PORSCHE-BOXSTER-986-REAR-CONTROL-ARM-LINK-ROD-TRW-OEM-A1233/202017931127?fits=Plat_Gen%3A986&epid=0&hash=item2f0934ff77:g:~zkAAOSwHLJZjZV7 ? Im guessing you can't change the ball joints and have to replace the fork/arm
edc
Thats it. You can rebush them but for the cost of a push and somebody to press it it's cheaper just to buy a new one. Don't be tempted to try a poly bush as one member here tried and smaller the arm in use.

Luciano casali
Had same problem sounded as if under the seats where their actually bolted to the car changed mine now not a peep terrific ,just a note when removing main bolt it is attached to a captive nut which makes the job easier great advice thanks
the baron
Does it rattle with the roof down, i know its more difficult with the ambient noise but i could be your roof rattling, I know mine does sometimes and it could be misinterpreted as the suspension. Luciano casali
Definitely tuning forks you can't get any play in situ, take one off and see how much play in it there's a steel tube that hits the fork ,just replaced all four noises gone and now feels a different car really solid and drives like a new car not a banger with all those rattles
Anker BS
The rattle is actually from the ball joints where the trailing arms are bolted to the chassis. Even badly worn and rattling joints will appear to be tight to the hand. My advice is to go ahead and change them. They aren't that expensive and they are easy change. Madlil
Had exactly the same issue on mine. Only rattled going slowly once car had warmed up. Changed the tuning forks at the rear and the rattle went.
